Individual Health Insurance

Health insurance is protection against medical costs. A health insurance policy is a contract between an insurer and an individual or group, in which the insurer agrees to provide specified health insurance at an agreed-upon price (the premium). Depending on your policy, your premium may be payable either in a lump sum or in installments.

Health insurance usually provides either direct payment or reimbursement for expenses associated with illnesses and injuries. The cost and range of protection provided by your health insurance will depend on your insurance provider and the particular policy you purchase. If your employer does not offer a health insurance plan, you may wish to purchase health insurance on your own.

Health Plans Explained

HMO - Health Maintenance Organization
For the payment of a monthly premium, your HMO will offer you a range of coverage benefits.  Most HMO plans require a copayment office visits, hospital stays, and ER visits.  In most cases you will have a Primary Physician and you must obtain referrals to see other providers or specialists.  This coverage has the least amount of flexibility.

PPO- Preferred Provider Organization
A PPO plan negotiates lower fees with a variety of doctors.  These doctors make up a "network".  Coverage consists of in-network and out-of-network coverage.  This type of plan has more options, but greater cost sharing when visiting an out-of-network provider.

POS - Point of Service Plan
This plan is an HMO plan but instead of requiring a referral, it will offer you three options when seeking medical care.  First option is to go to your Primary Care Physician, second, you can receive care through a PPO provider and and have coverage under "in-network" rules.  Third, you may receive care from out-of-network providers.

Fee-for-Service Plan (Indemnity)
Providers are reimbursed for services received by you on a case by case basis.  These plans offer the most flexibility because you can, for the most part, see any doctor and go to any hospital you want.
